006 - Fireworks in September with 5 Highlights

Art_Gallery_Weekend_1.gif

Hello Smart Art Lover,

The middle of August is a good time to write about the fireworks of the Berlin art world in September. Especially this year. Gallery Weekend, the highlight of the Berlin art calendar at the beginning of May, is now taking place at the same time as Berlin Art Week. This event traditionally frames the city's art fairs with numerous exhibition openings. Since Koelnmesse closed down the main Art Berlin fair last year, only Positions and paper positions berlin remain in this category. But enough background. Ready for the Arsenal?

Haus der Kulturen der Welt with Aby Warburg, 11. Berlin Biennale, K60 in the Wilhelm Hallen, Positions Berlin Art Fair, paper positions berlin, Boros im Berghain, GASAG Kunstpreis 2020 with Marc Bauer, Gropius Bau with the group show Down to Earth , Gallery Weekend Berlin with Tamina Amadyar, Josephine Baker, Brian Belott, Cathrine Biocca, Ross Bleckner, Tina Brägger, Jelena Bulajic, Miriam Cahn, Nina Canell, Olafur Eliasson, Vincent Fecteau, Berta Fischer, Sylvie Fleury, Marcius Galan, Isa Genzken, Raimund Girke, Gotthard Graubner, Andreas Greiner, Andreas Gursky, Marta Górnicka, Barbara Hammer, Adam Harvey, Richard Hawkins, Vásquez De La Horra, Anna K. E., Sanya Kantarovsky, Nora Kapfer, Felix Kiessling, Wilhelm Klotzek, Alexander Kluge, Karin Knefel, Friedrich Kunath, Austin Lee, Victor Man, Rosemary Mayer, Hellen Mirra, Sarah Morris, Michael Müller, D'Ette Nogle, Philippe Parreno, Jack Pierson, Émilie Pitoiset, Bettina Pousttchi, Seth Price, Grit Richter, Ugo Rondinone, Nicola Samorì, Jan-Ole Schiemann, Thomas Schütte, David Shrigley, Tobias Spichtig, Fiona Tan, Ambera Wellmann, Clare Woods, Ran Zhang and Otto Zitko, Messe in St. Agnes art fair at KÖNIG, KINDL - Center for Contemporary Art with Nik Nowak, Lerato Shadi and Ann Oren, Brücke Museum with Vivian Suter.

If you have read the last section completely, I congratulate you on your superpowers. This bombardment is absolutely understandable after the decline in business due to the lockdown, the cancellation of art fairs like Art Basel or now frieze London and Masters and the low travel activity. But what are the highlights for all the brave ones who take the time this week to travel around Berlin?

My 5 picks for Berlin Art Week and Gallery Weekend 2020

Let Us Exhibit a Revolution

Curated by María Berríos, Renata Cervetto, Lisette Lagnado and Agustín Pérez Rubio, the current issue has a Latin American focus. There have already been three previews, so-called experiences. I have taken a look at the first one. The works were in essence political, non-European and aimed at social movements. For the opening day I have planned an exhibition marathon of all four locations. And I am curious to see how the previous concept will be continued.

Concentrated Power in No Man's Land

Seven excellent Berlin galleries - alexander levy, BQ, ChertLüdde, Klemm's, Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Plan B and PSM - are exhibiting in the Wilhelm Hallen in Reinickendorf. So far, this place is completely foreign to me. All the more I am curious to discover this white spot on my city map.

Bunker Meets Berghain

Called Studio Berlin, the Boros Foundation (home of the famous Bunker Boys) presents works by 80 artists in the rooms of the legendary club. The organizers see the works created during the lockdown as an expression of the creative power of this city. Well put. I just say Hipsters Paradise, Part 1. And I am very enthusiastic about rediscovering this fantastic place.

Opening: September 8, by invitation only

Hipsters Paradise, Part 2

The Talk of the Gallery Weekend will definitely be the pop-up bar of the ultra-cool artist collective Slavs and Tartars, in the program of Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler. In cooperation with KW Institute for Contemporary Art, the Slavic answer to the European apéritif will be fermented and high-percentage. Under the daily changing guidance of an artist, the Georgian ritual of Tamada is celebrated, whatever that may be. Definitely book and find out for yourself.

The Beacon in September

As a smart alternative to the eternal fair carousel, the gallery owners Tim Neuger, Esther Schipper and Max Hetzler initiated this beacon in 2005. And were able to gather the crème de la crème of the Berlin gallery scene behind them very quickly. Thanks to Corvid-19 everything is a little different this year. Among other things, admission will be limited to smaller groups. It will be better to watch everything in peace during one of the later weeks, sometimes there is time until the end of October. Among many others I am looking forward to Andreas Greiner at DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM, Anna K.E. at Barbara Thumm and Grit Richter at Tanja Wagner.
